“We give not because we have much, but because we know what it’s like to lose almost everything.”
South Africa faced one of its darkest weeks when KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng were ravaged by looting and destruction. Many of the people of KZN were left with limited access to food and basic essentials, but then a beautiful thing happened. South African’s began rallying together to help.
Two such people were Evi Moller and Chad Botha. Being members of the travel and tourism industry, they had been hard hit by the COVID pandemic,. They immediately put out a plea through We Support, We Support All that’s food and We Support gives back – three social media platforms supporting the tourism and hospitality industries – with a goal of filling an eight-ton truck generously supplied by Inspire Furniture Rentals.
Evi and Chad set up various drop off points with members of the Sundowner and surrounding communities in Randburg, Gauteng, answering to the call for help. And they did so in abundance. Donations came from far and wide. Kgotso Maize Meal very generously donated bulk supplies of Mielie Meal. Ask Chris as well as the EMS Foundation, Tribal Tourist and the Wild Food Revolution generously jumped on board. With assistance from Vital Link and Simone Anderson Design, not to mention, the incredible community members who opened their hearts – the response was so overwhelming that they were able to fill a second eight-ton truck.
On Sunday morning, 18 July, the team of heroes bid farewell to the trucks and crew as they began their journey to deliver 16 tons of much needed food, nappies, toiletries, baby formula, veggies, pet food and so much more to the destitute people of KZN. Once the haul is safely delivered, the crew will be housed by a guest house who very kindly offered to them accommodation for the night.
As Evi always says, “Together we can. Alone we cannot”. Once again South African’s have proved that, in times of crisis, we stand united and work together. In the face of adversity, we will overcome!
